AFC Fylde Community Foundation's (AFCFCF) staff have worked hard and come together to help Sam Greenwood discover his desired career pathway.
Sam's first contact with the Foundation was through a referral from St Anne's Job Centre to be placed onto our Fylde Focus project.
Our team would regularly meet up with Sam at local cafe's in the region of Kirkham to build a rapport with him, make him aware of how the project works and discuss what his preferences are about his future.
Sam disclosed that he wanted to pursue a career in sports, but couldn't make his mind up regarding what sport specifically. Our team informed him that the Foundation provides Foundation degrees in partnership with the University of South Wales (USW) and EFL in the Community.
We offer Foundation degrees in Sports Coaching and Football Development and, a full BA(Hons) degree in Business Development which are all delivered by our Football and Education Co-ordinator, Connor Williams.
Sam was really keen on the idea of pursuing an education in sports so decided to opt for our USW course.
Our Fylde Focus staff guided Sam through the applications to his provider and also his student finance forms.
Although AFCFCF, based at Fylde Sports and Education Centre, are a satellite campus of USW, the first year students attended a residential trip to visit the on-campus facilities - which went brilliantly and provided them all with an excellent start to life as a university student.
Chris McNally, the Foundation's Employability and Skills Manager, who oversees both Fylde Focus and the USW programmes, said: "It's outstanding work from everyone involved. For two departments to come together to provide one person with an opportunity that could change their life is fantastic.
"The Foundation is all about creating opportunities for people and that's exactly what we've done for Sam."
Both USW and Fylde have far exceeded their expectations this year: "Fylde Focus are having an excellent year and USW has received a record high number of applicants - something we are immensely proud to be apart of."
Everyone at AFCFCF wishes both Sam, and the rest of the USW students the best of luck across their studies this year.
If you believe yourself or anyone you know would benefit from either Fylde Focus or our USW degree courses, please email natasha.green@afcfylde.co.uk for the former or connor.williams@afcfylde.co.uk for the latter.
