Our 2024/2025 academic year is underway as our first year USW students are on campus

September is upon us which brings the start of our University courses that we offer alongside University of South Wales (USW) and EFL Trust.

Both AFC Fylde Community Foundation (AFCFCF) and USW have received a record high of applications for their Football and Sports Coaching degrees for this upcoming academic year.

We offer two Foundation Degree opportunities in Sports Coaching and Football Development with the option to complete a third year 'top up' degree in order to gain a full BsC. The Foundation is also able to offer a full BA(Hons) degree in Business Development.

One of our new starters, Brett McGovern (pictured middle), previously studied and played for AFC Fylde's academy, made the move next door to the Foundation's USW courses.

Brett said the reason for choosing to study with AFCFCF was because: "The staff who work at the Foundation are amazing. There's a load of opportunities to gain experience, whether it be working in schools, in the community or our Development Centre.

"There's lots of different ways I can improve my coaching ability which is the main reason I took this course."

Brett has taken on a role as a Casual Sports Coach with the Foundation, which he is extremely grateful for: "My passion is football, so the fact I already get to coach football at the very start of my career is unbelievable, I'm lucky that it's a very practical approach and to be learning from staff who have years of experience within football.

The 18-year-old has his eyes firmly set on his career pathway after finishing university: "Obviously I want a job, I'd love for it to be at the Community Foundation after I've completed my degree. You never know where your pathway will take you, but I definitely want a future within the coaching industry and hopefully it can be here.

"I have the opportunity to do my FA level one, UEFA C and UEFA B [coaching badges]. There's the chance to coach different people who are at different stages, which is brilliant for my development."

Connor Williams, our Football and Education Co-ordinator, who is the mentor for Brett and the rest of the USW students at Fylde Sports and Education Centre, our USW satellite campus, is "really looking forward to the year ahead".

Connor also said: "We have two fantastic year groups that are really dedicated to achieving their goals. The students are a credit to the Foundation and I can't wait to see how all of their coaching careers begin to develop even more over the next academic year."

"It's a new role for me so I look forward to experiencing a new path alongside the students. We visited the University of South Wales at the start of September and it was an incredible experience, all of the tutors and other mentors were extremely welcoming and the facilities were outstanding."
