Brand New Armed Forces Employability Role

ree

A former member of the Duke of Lancaster Regiment has joined AFC Fylde Community Foundation as our Armed Forces Employability Officer.

As a result of recent funding we've received from BAE Systems Air and CABWI, we have created the role to provide support for current or ex members of the Armed Forces, or their families back into employment, education or training.

Matt's role will consist of providing current or ex-servicepeople and their families with support writing their CV, practicing different interview techniques, offering a specialised training course and helping search for suitable jobs.

Matt joined the infantry for the Duke of Lancaster Regiment when he was 20 years old (in 2007) where he proceeded to join the second Battalion in 2008.

He then moved to Cyprus for three years whilst completing two tours of Afghanistan before moving back to Weeton; doing eight years as a Signaller in the Signal Platoon.

Matt, who will be working closely with Weeton Barracks, said: "Being apart of Weeton Barracks was extremely handy as I am from Blackpool. I managed to 'live out' so I was able to have the perfect home and work life balance.

"At Weeton we were very busy, we'd go overseas for our fitness and exercises and twice a year we would be out in either Germany or Kenya."

Matt explained why - when he saw the position available - he thought it was perfect for him: "I chose this position at the Foundation because my previous roles, I believe them to have almost had no meaning. I wanted to help people.

"From my time at the army I gained a lot of experience but not necessarily qualifications - that doesn't mean I don't have a lot to offer to others.

"When I left the Armed Forces a few years ago I expected to walk into a nice, easy job on a decent wage. That was not the case. As a result of this, I want to help anyone leaving the Forces or any relations to ensure they don't suffer what I went through."

If you or someone you know would benefit from Matt's help, please do not hesitate to get in touch via: matthew.lucas@afcfylde.co.uk - or for support non-related to employment, please contact: lee.geraghty@afcfylde.co.uk
